Synopsis:

Conscious Teacher Training is designed to inform participants, enhancing their skills and effectiveness. The course is designed as a holistic approach geared towards developing knowledge and self-awareness, to help support children in reaching their full potential.

Presenter:

Aya Husni Bey has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Brighton as well as qualifications in Early Years Teacher Training, Play-work and Therapeutic Play Practitioner from various UK colleges, PTUK/PTI Post Graduate Training in Therapeutic Creative Practice and CPD Art Therapy at the Tobias School of Therapeutic Arts. She has been active in many teaching and educational projects focused on young children in the UK and France and has assisted the A.F.E.L children's charity, an organization which provided after school care and support for children and their families suffering from drug and alcohol misuse and abuse in a project sponsored by the United Nations in Lebanon.

Synopsis:

Nothing is more rewarding for a teacher, than seeing students smile and laugh while they learn. Using music in the classroom is a great way for teachers to achieve success with English language learners. There are a variety of different ways to use music in the classroom. In this hands-on interactive workshop teachers will explore different ways to incorporate music, songs and lyrics into their lessons. 

Presented by:

Laila Arif  holds BA in English Literature, Purdue University (USA) and an MA in TESOL from University of London (UK). She is fluent in Arabic, English, Italian and French. Since 1992 she has been active in EFL teaching and upgrading of Libyan teachers in the public and private sectors, offering support to where needed to obtain good quality teaching for the future generations of Libya. She is also co-founder of the English Teachers Forum, Libya. She's now the Educational Consultant at ISM International School, Tripoli, Libya  

Therese Martin (Khadija) has been living in Libya since 1989. She is a CELTA qualified teacher and director of English language courses at Almaqar IT & English Language Training in Tripoli. She co-founded the English Teachers' Forum in 2006.

Why CELTA?

This presentation will deal with the relevance of the Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) to the Libyan teaching context. Most language teachers and learners in Libya have experienced language learning and teaching from a teacher centred approach. The CELTA is a teacher training course that equips teachers to involve learners more; using the knowledge they (the learners) bring to the classroom to communicate in English. The talk will include a short demonstration on how vocabulary can be taught in a more student centred way instead of just telling students the meaning. The course syllabus, assessment and course structure will also be highlighted.

Presenter:
Glenn Allies is a teacher and teacher trainer at the British Council. He teaches on the Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course in Libya. He has extensive experience in teacher training with public school teachers in Korea. His interests include: learner centred classrooms, world Englishes and extensive reading programmes.

Workshop: Developing Cultural Fluency - April 13, 2013

Synopsis:

“Developing Cultural Fluency” means not just understanding the words that a person from another culture is saying; it also means correctly interpreting what they really mean.  Teaching English grammar and vocabulary is only part of teaching students to understand English speakers from other cultures.  World-view and cultural assumptions are also a critical part of communication and understanding.

This workshop includes understanding the three main types of world-views in our world today.  It will include becoming aware of other cultural dimensions that are critical to good communication, trust and mutually beneficial relationships. We will also review the general differences between typical Libyan culture and typical American cultural.

The outcomes of this workshop will be learning your own dominant world-view, better self-understanding and better understanding of other people on several different cultural levels.  These outcomes should be of great benefit to those attending in terms of reduced misunderstandings and conflicts, and more successful communications both professionally and personally.

Presenter:

Mr. Joseph Branch brings over 30 years of intercultural training and experience in the international business and training world.  He is a certified executive coach with the International Coaching Federation, and a certified behavior consultant in leadership development, strategic consulting and leadership coaching. He has lived and worked long-term in 7 countries, speaks several languages, and is starting his 3rd international business in North Africa.

Dorothy Zemach is an author, editor, teacher, and teacher trainer in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). She taught English, French, and Japanese for over 18 years in Asia, Africa, and the US and holds an MA in TESL from the School for International Training in Vermont.

Now she concentrates on writing and editing English language teaching materials and textbooks and conducting teacher training workshops. Her areas of specialty and interest include teaching writing, teaching reading, business English, academic English, testing, and humor. She is a frequent plenary speaker at international conferences, and a regular blogger for Teacher Talk at Azar Grammar.

Peter Lucantoni has had a long career in English language teaching and teacher training in Europe and the Middle East. He is the author and co-author of several popular coursebooks for students, including IGCSE English as a Second Language Levels 1 and 2, and IGCSE English as a Second Language Exam Preparation Guide, both published by Cambridge University Press. He is currently writing one level of and is series editor for a new three-level course for secondary school learners, due to be published by Cambridge University Press. Peter has also published with Pearson, Hodder-Murry, Macmillan and Garnet Education. He is the Cambridge University Press Regional Teacher Trainer for the Middle East and North Africa, and regularly speaks at ELT conferences and trains teachers internationally in both the public and private sectors. He is a course tutor for Cambridge CELTYL, CELTA & DELTA, is an assessor for Cambridge CELTYL, and an examiner for Cambridge speaking examinations.

Experiential Learning Workshop

Synopsis

Subject:  Fun in the classroom – Think Experiential.  Using indoor and outdoor experiential learning activities as an integral part of Language learning.

A fun “Ice-breaker” will start the session followed by a communication intensive team task in which team-based mildly competitive action and removal of some senses (eg sight)  creates a situation where verbal communication is absolutely essential.

A guided discussion will break down the dynamics of this activity and build a basic “model” for using experiential learning in many learning areas.  A simple model of “Planning by outcome” will be discussed so that participants can “do this at home”.

Sources of ideas for activities will be presented and participants will be shown where to find ideas, resources and most importantly – how to create, develop, adapt their own ideas and thus use Experiential learning to enhance language and other learning. 

Biography: Graham Lind

Currently Principal at Tripoli International School, Graham spent  7 years in Research and Regional Planning, after which he “followed his passion” as he developed and directed the Outdoor Pursuits Intramural, Extra mural and cross curricular (Senior English teacher) and Post Matriculation programs at South Africa’s leading Outdoor and Environmental Education Private School, Treverton. He then started  “Adventure Educators” offering Educational and Team building Experiential learning to schools, corporations and NGO’s  and  also ran a GCSE Private school for two years.  He also Chaired/ Co-chaired the formation of a Tourism route and an Experiential Education body. He has degrees in English & Geography and a wide range of technical outdoor instructor qualifications including SCUBA, Sailing, River Guiding, Mountaineering and Rock Climbing as well as a commercial Captains ticket.

Biography: Wendy Lind

Also at Tripoli International School, where she is Key Stage one Co-ordinator and a Year One teacher.    Wendy, after a plethora of experience in hospitality and informal education Wendy joined Graham as Director of Adventure Educators in 2000 concentrating on children’s events, hospitality and corporate program development and facilitation. She directed operations and trained staff as the company developed and has a creative approach to developing and adapting effective and inexpensive programming.

"Michael Rundell has been a lexicographer since 1980, and he is the author (with Sue Atkins) of the Oxford Guide to Practical Lexicography (2008). He edited several well-known dictionaries before becoming Editor-in-Chief of the Macmillan family of learners’ dictionaries. He was involved in the development of the British National Corpus, and has been at the forefront of applying new technology to the development of reference resources. He has published widely in the field of corpus-based language study, and his company (Lexicography MasterClass) runs training courses in lexicography and lexical computing."
